On Thursday 16 October, the kick-off of Safety on Tour took place at Mourik Industry in the Botlek area of Rotterdam. This initiative by Safety&Health@Work aims to bring together professionals from the safety sector and inspire them with real-life stories about safety in its broadest sense.
Following a welcome address by Pieter Bas Dujardin, Exhibition Manager of Safety&Health@Work (Rotterdam Ahoy), the floor was given to Erwin van den Broek, Director of Safety at Mourik Industry. In an inspiring presentation, he guided attendees through the development of Mourik’s renewed safety approach. Over the past two years, the organisation has been working intensively on strengthening its safety culture, focusing on pillars such as processes, learning and continuous improvement, knowledge and skills, and collaboration within the supply chain.
A key element of this approach is storytelling. Mourik developed a comic book centred around a fictional incident. Two different scenarios highlight the incident from different perspectives, encouraging employees at all levels of the chain to reflect on their own behaviour in an accessible and recognisable way.
The interactive session sparked lively discussions, including on the "stop reflex” — having the courage to pause when something does not feel safe — and on the crucial role of leadership in safety awareness.
The meeting concluded with a shared lunch, providing ample opportunity for further discussion and the exchange of experiences. The first edition of Safety on Tour clearly left participants wanting more, thanks to Mourik Industry for the organisation and for delivering an inspiring start to a series of future events.
Some participant reactions:
