Nienke Bagchus is Programme Director of Safety at Rijkswaterstaat

Rijkswaterstaat faces an enormous challenge: the renewal and renovation of bridges, viaducts and locks built in the 1960s and 1970s, while keeping the infrastructure operational throughout the process. Safe and healthy working conditions are central to this challenge — for employees, road and waterway users, and the surrounding environment.

Nienke Bagchus, incoming Director of Safety at Rijkswaterstaat, explains how RWS is preparing for this major task, both organisationally and in terms of its approach to safety. One of the key pillars is a renewed structure for the safety organisation.
